U.S. stocks close lower


NEW YORK, March 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 403.51 points, or 0.83 percent, to 48,501.27. The S&P 500 sank 64.99 points, or 0.94 percent, to 6,816.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 232.167 points, or 1.02 percent, to 22,516.691.

All 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with materials and industrials leading the laggards by going down 2.69 percent and 1.96 percent, respectively. Financials posted the weakest decline, down 0.18 percent.
