Romania issues orange flood warning for southern rivers

BUCHAREST, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Romania's National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) on Saturday issued an orange flood warning for parts of southern Romania after heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours pushed river levels higher.

The warning applies to the Neajlov River, specifically on the sector downstream of its confluence with the Dambovnic River and upstream of its junction with the Ilfovat River, in Giurgiu county.

Hydrologists said that until 12:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) on Sunday, significant runoff on slopes, torrents and small streams could trigger flash floods on smaller rivers.

A separate yellow flood warning is in force from 10:00 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) on Feb. 21 until midnight on Feb. 22 for rivers in the Calmatui basin.

Romania uses a three-tier flood warning system -- yellow, orange and red -- indicating rising levels of risk from potential flooding to extreme danger.
