"Wuthering Heights" tops North American box office in opening weekend


LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. Pictures' "Wuthering Heights" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 34.8 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend, according to figures released by Comscore on Sunday.

The period romantic drama is also projected to collect 42 million dollars internationally over the Valentine's Day weekend.

Directed by Emerald Fennell and adapted from Emily Bronte's 1847 novel, the film stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, respectively.

It holds an approval rating of 63 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes currently and received a "B" grade from audiences on an "A+" to "F" scale polled by CinemaScore.

Another newcomer, Sony Pictures' animated sports comedy "GOAT" landed in second place with 26 million dollars this weekend.

Rounding out the top three, Amazon MGM Studios' new thriller "Crime 101" opened with 15.1 million dollars through Sunday.
