CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Tabitha Stoecker and Matt Weston mounted a late charge to deny two German pairs and secure the skeleton mixed team gold at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Winter Games here on Sunday.
After Germany's Susanne Kreher/Axel Jungk and Jacqueline Pfeifer/Christopher Grotheer provisionally occupied the top two places, with one minute 59.53 seconds and 1:59.54 respectively, the British duo, the last to race, set a new track record of 1:59.36 to seize the title.
It marked Weston's second gold medal of these Games, after the men's individual event on Friday.
"It's probably one of my favorites. The individual event is amazing and I'm very pleased with that, but doing it as a team in what is usually an individual sport, and standing here as Olympic champions together - and for me, twice - it's absolutely mental. It's crazy and I'm really looking forward to celebrating," said 28-year-old Weston.
Earlier, Weston beat Jungk and Grotheer in the men's final while Stoecker finished fifth in the women's event.
"I don't have words. I actually can't believe it. We're Olympic champions - as a team," said 25-year-old Stoecker.
Jungk was left heartbroken after claiming his second silver medal of Milan-Cortina 2026.
"It hurts a little bit more than in the singles race because I thought together we could beat Britain. My push was too slow today; it didn't feel as good as in the singles race," he said.
Another British pair, Freya Tarbit and Marcus Wyatt, finished fourth. China's Zhao Dan/Chen Wenhao and Liang Yuxin/Lin Qinwei came fifth and eighth, respectively.
Britain claimed two out of three skeleton gold medals, while Austria's Janine Flock captured the women's title. Germany had to settle for second- and third-place finishes across the three events.
