PARIS, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- A man armed with a knife was subdued on Friday evening after threatening a gendarme near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, French media reported.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) when a gendarme was threatened by the assailant, France's BFM TV said, adding that another gendarme present at the scene opened fire with his service weapon, subduing the suspect.

The man was taken to the hospital by emergency services in critical condition, and no other injuries were reported.

On-site investigations are underway, and the Paris police prefect was reported to be present at the scene.

France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office announced later in the evening that it had taken charge of the case and opened an investigation.
