NUUK, Greenland, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of U.S. lawmakers is set to visit Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, this weekend, the U.S. Consulate in Nuuk said in a press release on Friday.

The consulate said the trip is taking place at the invitation of the Greenlandic government, but did not disclose which politicians are included in the delegation. Local media, however, reported that Senator Lisa Murkowski is expected to participate.

Murkowski recently visited Denmark as part of a delegation to discuss tensions surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration's stated interest in taking over Greenland.

During their stay, the congressional delegation will meet local officials, members of parliament and business leaders to "better understand the perspectives of the Greenlandic government and people" and to "discuss bilateral relations," according to the consulate.

On Friday, France and Canada each opened a consulate in Nuuk. France has opened a consulate in Greenland, becoming the first European Union country to establish a diplomatic mission in the autonomous Danish territory, the French Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Jean-Noel Poirier has taken up the post as the French consul general in Nuuk, a move to strengthen France's consular network, the ministry said in a post on social media X.

Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Canadian Governor General Mary Simonand and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt attended the opening ceremony of Canada's new consulate. Simonand will also meet with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen during her stay, said local media.

Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policy. Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to "obtain" Greenland, a move that has been repeatedly rejected by Europe.
