KHARTOUM, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) said on Friday that a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy came under attack by a drone in Sudan's North Kordofan state.

In a statement, Denise Brown, the UN resident coordinator in Sudan, expressed deep concern over the attack.

"I am deeply concerned by a drone attack earlier today on trucks contracted by the WFP in North Kordofan," Brown said.

The trucks were traveling from Kosti to deliver life-saving food assistance to displaced families near El Obeid when they were hit, tragically killing at least one person and injuring several others, she said.

"The trucks caught fire, destroying food commodities intended for life-saving humanitarian response," Brown added.

The UN official noted that the incident comes after another drone strike earlier this week near a WFP facility in Yabus, Blue Nile State, which left one staff member injured.

The UN has frequently reported that its convoys and those of other international organizations in Sudan come under aerial attack, while large parts of the Darfur and Kordofan regions continue to face severe food shortages.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions both within Sudan and abroad.
