30 kg of cocaine seized at border crossing in SE Tunisia

TUNIS, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian customs authorities have seized 30 kg of cocaine at the Ras Jedir border crossing in southeastern Tunisia, thwarting a smuggling attempt into the country, the General Directorate of Customs said Monday.

Customs officials reported that during entry procedures, an X-ray inspection of a foreign-registered vehicle revealed a suspicious hidden compartment. A subsequent thorough search uncovered 26 slabs of cocaine totaling approximately 30 kg.

A formal report was filed, and the public prosecutor has ordered the case to be referred to the competent security services for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Located about 600 km southeast of the capital Tunis, Ras Jedir is one of the main border crossing points between Tunisia and Libya.
