BUDAPEST, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on Wednesday that Hungary should prepare for continued Ukrainian interference in its parliamentary elections and would defend its sovereignty.

In a statement posted on social media, Szijjarto said Ukraine had summoned Hungary's ambassador in Kyiv earlier in the day, adding that Hungarian officials were not surprised by either the summons or the content of the discussions.

He said Ukrainian officials again criticized Hungary's plan to seek public opinion through a national petition on the use of Hungarian funds related to Ukraine.

Szijjarto added that no explanation was provided for what he described as insulting remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky toward Prime Minister Viktor Orban, nor for comments made by Ukraine's foreign minister. Ukraine has rejected the accusation.

On Monday, Orban said Hungary would take diplomatic steps over what he called offensive and threatening remarks by Ukrainian political leaders. Hungary subsequently summoned Ukraine's ambassador.
