Green hydrogen project boosts Portugal's energy transition efforts

LISBON, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese energy company Galp announced on Friday the completion of the installation of a green hydrogen production unit.

A total of ten electrolysis modules with a total capacity of 100 megawatts have been installed at the Sines refinery, a coastal industrial hub located south of Lisbon.

The project will position the country as a key player in Europe's energy transition, the company said.

The unit is expected to enter full operation in the second half of this year, producing up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year to replace around 20 percent of gray hydrogen currently used in refinery operations.

This substitution is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 110,000 tonnes per year in scope 1 and 2 carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, Galp said in a statement.
