U.S. stocks close lower


NEW YORK, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 870.74 points, or 1.76 percent, to 48,488.59. The S&P 500 sank 143.15 points, or 2.06 percent, to 6,796.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 561.07 points, or 2.39 percent, to 22,954.32.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with technology and consumer discretionary leading the laggards by losing 2.94 percent and 2.82 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, consumer staples bucked the trend by going up 0.12 percent.
