U.S. stocks close lower

NEW YORK, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 83.11 points, or 0.17 percent, to 49,359.33. The S&P 500 sank 4.46 points, or 0.06 percent, to 6,940.01. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 14.63 points, or 0.06 percent, to 23,515.39.

Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with real estate and industrials leading the gainers by rising 1.2 percent and 0.65 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, health and communication services led the laggards by going down 0.84 percent and 0.72 percent, respectively.
