Freezing weather drives Lithuania gas use to two-year peak

VILNIUS, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania recorded its highest natural gas consumption in two years this week as freezing temperatures lifted demand, the country's gas transmission operator said on Friday.

Consumers used 118.4 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas on Monday alone, marking the highest daily level since January 5, 2024, Amber Grid said, the Baltic News Service (BNS) reported.

Gas use rose as demand for electricity generation increased amid the cold snap, the company said.

"When other technologies do not generate enough electricity and temperatures fall well below zero, natural gas allows power production to be ramped up and helps prevent electricity prices from surging," Amber Grid CEO Nemunas Biknius said in a press release.

Biknius said in a Facebook post on Friday that daily natural gas demand this week is between 105 and 118 gigawatt hours.

Most of the gas has been regasified via the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas terminal, Amber Grid said.
