FRANKFURT, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Frankfurt Airport, the largest in Germany, on Friday posted a 2.6 percent uptick in passenger volume in 2025.

The airport, a crucial European hub for both passengers and cargo, handled around 63.2 million passengers in 2025, according to a press release issued by operator Fraport Group.

Frankfurt Airport also emerged as one of Europe's leading airports in terms of hub connectivity in 2025, with flights operated by 94 airlines connecting to 301 destinations.

Business across all airports managed by Fraport worldwide expanded solidly in 2025, with the company reporting that overall passenger numbers climbed 5.3 percent to 183.7 million.

Nevertheless, despite the growth in passenger volumes, Fraport CEO Stefan Schulte noted that the German market continued to lag behind its European competitors. Passenger volumes in Frankfurt were around 10 percent below pre-pandemic levels in 2025.

Additionally, the company's cargo business in Frankfurt also saw a slight increase of 1.1 percent in 2025 to around 2.1 million metric tons.

Commenting on the relief measures taken by the German federal government, including a reduction in the air passenger tax, Schulte said they represented "the first step towards reducing the burden on our industry." However, he added, "More is needed if Germany is to catch up to the competition."
