BAGHDAD, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and two others injured on Thursday in a road accident in Iraq's eastern Diyala province, provincial traffic authorities said.

The crash occurred on the highway linking Baghdad to the town of Khalis when a vehicle lost control after a tire blowout, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided with oncoming traffic, the media office of the Diyala Traffic Directorate said in a statement.

"Excessive speed and a lack of regular maintenance were the primary causes of this accident," the statement added.
