Russian customs seizes over 9,000 vehicles in 2025 gray import crackdown

MOSCOW, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Federal Customs Service seized over 9,000 vehicles transporting goods in violation of regulations in 2025 as part of its crackdown on gray imports, head of the agency Valery Pikalyov said Wednesday.

Pikalyov told Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin during a meeting that large-scale measures to improve economic transparency were implemented in 2025, with special attention paid to combating gray imports.

"As a result, more than 9,000 vehicles transporting consignments in breach of customs regulations were identified, with the total weight of such goods exceeding 136,000 tonnes," Pikalyov added.

Inspection activities are also being conducted on the circulation of goods on the domestic market. Unlawfully imported motorcycles, electronic items, assorted equipment and tobacco products have been identified.

According to Pikalyov, over 23 billion rubles (around 293 million U.S. dollars) in customs payments were transferred to the federal budget every day in 2025.
