U.S. stocks close lower

NEW YORK, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 398.21 points, or 0.80 percent, to 49,191.99. The S&P 500 sank 13.53 points, or 0.19 percent, to 6,963.74. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 24.032 points, or 0.10 percent, to 23,709.873.

Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and consumer staples leading the gainers by rising 1.53 percent and 1.08 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, financials and consumer discretionary led the laggards by going down 1.84 percent and 0.51 percent, respectively.
