Hungary's tourism hits record high in 2025: official

BUDAPEST, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Hungary's tourism sector reached a new all-time high in 2025, with visitor numbers exceeding 20 million and surpassing previous records, a top tourism official said here on Monday.

Zoltan Guller, head of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, told reporters at a press conference reviewing preliminary 2025 data that the country, with a population of less than 10 million, welcomed twice as many guests as its total inhabitants.

Hungary's tourism growth outpaced the European Union (EU) average by 2.5 times, exceeding that of regional neighbors including Austria, Croatia, and the Czech Republic, Guller said. He added that Hungary ranked seventh in the EU for guest number growth last year.

Meanwhile, passenger traffic at Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport reached 19 million, the highest level in its 75-year history.

According to the data, domestic and foreign visitors accounted for roughly equal shares of the total guest numbers. The capital city of Budapest saw a 13-percent increase in visitors, hosting over 7 million international and more than 1 million domestic tourists.
