Winter storm in France leaves 5 dead, disrupts air travel

PARIS, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have died on French roads since Monday as heavy snow and icy conditions caused severe traffic disruptions, French news channel BFMTV reported Tuesday.

The worst-hit area was the department of Landes, where three people died in two separate accidents due to icy conditions. The Ile-de-France region also reported two road fatalities.

In response to the severe weather, French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said there will be significant flight reductions at Paris airports on Wednesday. The cancellations, necessary to allow for runway snow removal and aircraft de-icing, will affect some scheduled flights at Paris-Charles de Gaulle, France's largest airport, and at Paris-Orly, the country's second-largest hub.

Meteo-France, the national weather service, has issued orange alerts for snow and ice in 38 departments, warning that another winter storm is expected to hit central-western and northern France on Wednesday.
