U.S. stocks close higher


NEW YORK, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.99 percent to 49,462.08. The S&P 500 added 0.62 percent to 6,944.82. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 0.65 percent to 23,547.17.

Nine of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with materials and health leading the gainers by rising 2.04 percent and 1.96 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and communication services led the laggards by going down 2.81 percent and 0.49 percent, respectively.
