22 migrants killed in traffic accident in NE Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 Ethiopian migrants were killed and about 65 others injured in a traffic accident in the northeastern Afar regional state on Tuesday, according to local authorities.

The accident happened at dawn when a lorry carrying migrants overturned, the Afar Regional Government Communication Office said in a statement.

The injured are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby health facilities, many of them in critical condition, according to the statement.

"The lorry was crowded with migrants, who were deceived by illegal brokers and had no understanding of the dangers related to the travel route," the statement said.

In recent years, desperate Ethiopian migrants have attempted to cross the Red Sea from Djibouti to reach the Middle East via Yemen, with many aiming to travel onward to Saudi Arabia for job opportunities.
