"Avatar: Fire and Ash" tops North American box office for 3rd consecutive weekend


LOS ANGELES, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Disney and 20th Century's epic science fiction film "Avatar: Fire and Ash" continued to lead the North American box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated 40 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales, figures from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

The third installment in James Cameron's Avatar franchise has grossed 306 million dollars in North America and 777.1 million dollars internationally, with an estimated global total of over 1 billion dollars.

Disney's animated comedy film "Zootopia 2" remained in the second spot with 19 million dollars this weekend. After just six weekends, the sequel to 2016's "Zootopia" has earned 363.6 million dollars domestically for a worldwide total of 1.59 billion dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Lionsgate's thriller film "The Housemaid" collected 14.87 million dollars in its third weekend, pushing its domestic tally to 75.7 million dollars through Sunday.
