Canada's GDP decreases 0.3 pct in October

OTTAWA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Canada's real GDP decreased 0.3 percent in October, offsetting a 0.2 percent increase in September, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The decline was driven by contractions in goods-producing and services-producing industries. Overall, 11 of 20 industrial sectors contracted in October, said the national statistical agency.

Goods-producing industries were down 0.7 percent in October, as most sectors comprising the grouping contracted, led by the manufacturing sector, said the agency.

It said that services-producing industries declined 0.2 percent in the month, impacted by a few labor stoppages that dampened the overall activity.

According to the national statistical agency, advance information indicates that real GDP by industry increased 0.1 percent in November.

Increases in educational services, construction and transportation and warehousing were partially offset by decreases in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction and manufacturing, said Statistics Canada.
