OTTAWA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A police officer was shot and injured Friday morning in Welland, a city in Canada's Ontario province, after police responded to a shooting incident that resulted in a male suspect being contained.

The Niagara Regional Police Service said that "the officer has been transported to hospital as a precaution to assess injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening."

A male suspect has been "contained within a building in the area," police said.

Authorities issued an urgent shelter-in-place order for residents within a large perimeter, instructing them to lock all doors and windows and stay away from them until further notice. Schools in the immediate area and the Welland Hospital were also placed in lockdown.

A heavy police presence has been reported to continue in the area, and the investigation is ongoing.
