Several killed in bus crash in Stockholm, Sweden: police

HELSINKI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Several people were killed and others injured in a bus accident in the Swedish capital Stockholm on Friday, Swedish police said.

The crash occurred at around 15:30 local time (1430 GMT) on Valhallavagen, a major boulevard in the Ostermalm district in the northeastern part of Stockholm's inner city. A double-decker bus collided with a structure at a bus stop along the street. Swedish Television SVT reported that the city's rescue service described the scene as chaotic.

Police did not specify the number of fatalities, saying only that "several" people had died. The incident is being investigated as "aggravated causing of death", a police spokesperson said. Local newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the bus driver has been detained. Authorities have not yet clarified whether passengers were on board or released details on those affected.

Images published by Swedish media showed rescue workers assisting people trapped under the vehicle. A nearby shop owner told SVT the bus struck a pole in front of the shelter, prompting several people to run into shops seeking help.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a post on X that the cause of the crash remained unclear and offered condolences to the victims and their families.
