LISBON, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- More than 517,000 people received COVID-19 booster vaccinations during the first three weeks of Portugal's special vaccination campaign, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) reported Tuesday.

An additional 872,419 people received flu vaccinations during the same period between Sept. 23 and Oct. 12, it said.

The seasonal vaccination campaign runs through April 30, 2026, across SNS health units and 2,500 community pharmacies nationwide. The DGS aims to vaccinate approximately 2.5 million people against flu and 1.5 million against COVID-19 by the campaign's end.

The DGS recommends COVID-19 and flu vaccinations for all people over 60 years, chronic disease patients of all ages, and healthcare professionals.

According to DGS, the vaccination against these viruses prevents serious illness and reduces healthcare burden during the winter months.
