Few dead in south India stampede

NEW DELHI, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- A few people died and many others were injured in a stampede at a political gathering in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu late on Saturday, confirmed a local police officer over the phone.

The stampede was reported from Tamil Nadu's Karur district, when film actor Vijay was holding a public gathering in support of his political outfit Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

"The death toll was feared to be around 20," said a news report by Aajtak TV channel.

Those injured were admitted to a local hospital. Further details were awaited.
