ATHENS, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Greece's national electricity distribution operator DEDDHE has unveiled a preliminary network development plan for 2026-2030, outlining investments of 4.79 billion euros (5.56 billion U.S. dollars) to strengthen power grid, enhance climate resilience, and promote digital transformation, local media reported Wednesday.

The plan includes more than 200 projects over five years, focusing on protecting forest areas from wildfires, relocating vulnerable power lines, and deploying smart technologies such as advanced meters.

Key initiatives cover network reinforcement and modernization, expansion of electricity access for new consumers, and the installation of millions of smart meters, enabling households to monitor electricity use in real time and shift consumption to off-peak hours.

DEDDHE also plans measures to enhance forest and climate resilience, including undergrounding and relocating power lines in vulnerable urban, peri-urban, and forest areas.

Greece's electricity grid has faced significant challenges in recent years. Wildfires have caused extensive damage to power infrastructure, leading to prolonged outages in affected areas. The ongoing heatwave has further stressed the electricity grid, pushing demand to peak levels and testing its capacity to maintain a stable supply. (1 euro = 1.16 U.S. dollar)
