NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 152.81 points, or 0.34 percent, to 44,785.5. The S&P 500 sank 25.61 points, or 0.4 percent, to 6,370.17. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 72.55 points, or 0.34 percent, to close at 21,100.31.
Nine of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with consumer staples and utilities leading the laggards by losing 1.18 percent and 0.71 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and materials led the gainers by adding 0.71 percent and 0.26 percent, respectively.
