KISUMU, Kenya, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 people were killed in a road accident in Kisumu County, western Kenya, on Friday evening, police updated.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina said the victims were mourners traveling in a school bus when it crashed and overturned at a roundabout in Kisumu.

According to Maina, the bus owned by AIC Naki High School was travelling from Kakamega toward Kisumu when the accident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. local time.

He said the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle as it approached the roundabout at a high speed, crossed into the opposite lane, and plunged into a ditch.

"Among the deceased are 10 women, 10 men, and a girl. The cause of the accident is still under investigation," Maina told journalists at the scene.

Meanwhile, five people sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment, while 15 others, including a child, suffered minor injuries, Maina said.
