Austria records 3 pct inflation in May, driven by housing, energy costs

VIENNA, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The prices in Austria were 3 percent higher on average in May than a year earlier, according to a press release on Wednesday.

The main price driver in May 2025 was the group of housing, water and energy, which saw a rise in price of 5 percent compared to May 2024, Statistics Austria said.

In breakdown, an 8.9-percent price hike was seen in electricity, gas and other fuels altogether in May. The price for rents went up 4.1 percent, while that for maintenance and repair of the dwelling rose 2.7 percent.

"Compared to May of the previous year there were again noticeable price increases in restaurants and supermarkets, while the increase in food prices was lower than the general inflation rate," says Thomas Burg, director general of statistics at Statistics Austria.

Prices for restaurants and hotels in May this year saw their price jump by 5.8 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively, compared to a year ago.

Food price, however, increased 2.4 percent, lower than the 3-percent inflation rate in May. Prices for transport fell by 0.9 percent, Statistics Austria said.
