GitHub, Microsoft join Anthropic's MCP steering committee

SAN FRANCISCO, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft and GitHub announced they are joining the steering committee for MCP, the open standard developed by Anthropic to enable artificial intelligence (AI) models to connect with external data systems, at the Microsoft Build 2025 conference on Monday.

MCP (Model Connection Protocol) is rapidly gaining adoption across the AI industry. Earlier this year, both OpenAI and Google expressed their commitment to supporting MCP in their respective AI products.

The protocol allows AI models to access and interact with data sources such as business applications, content repositories, and development tools. It supports two-way communication between AI-driven systems and backend data sources. Developers can build MCP servers to expose data and services, and create MCP clients that interface with those servers on demand.

Microsoft and GitHub are promising broad native support for MCP across their ecosystems. This includes integration with Microsoft Azure and Windows 11.

"Developers will be able to wrap desired features and capabilities in their apps as MCP servers and make them available for Windows," said Microsoft.

GitHub, Microsoft's corporate, said that the company and the MCP steering committee collaborated to design a registry service for MCP servers.
