Lufthansa narrows Q1 loss amid revenue growth, strong travel demand

FRANKFURT, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Lufthansa Group reported on Tuesday a reduced adjusted operating loss of 722 million euros (823 million U.S. dollars) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, driven by revenue increases and a recovery in international travel demand.

According to the company's financial report, the group's revenue rose 10 percent year-on-year to 8.13 billion euros (9.27 billion U.S. dollars). Although seasonal weakness and growing cost pressures impacted profitability, the revenue growth helped trim losses compared to 849 million euros recorded in the same period last year.

During the first quarter, the group's airlines expanded their capacity by almost five percent compared with Q1 2024. Revenue from passenger airlines rose by six percent during the period to 5.9 billion euros. Lufthansa also reported that its EBIT margin improved by 2.6 percentage points to minus 8.9 percent.

Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said he was pleased to see that all airlines within the Lufthansa Group were able to sell their expanded capacity at higher yields, with the core brand Lufthansa improving its punctuality and stability and achieving its best operational start to a year of flight operations in a decade.

Looking ahead, the company expects another strong summer travel season on the back of resilient demand. However, it warned of external risks, including geopolitical tensions and shifting global trade dynamics.

Lufthansa also cautioned that U.S. trade policies could create spillover effects in the global aviation market and further strain supply chains.

Despite the uncertainties, the group remains optimistic about an increase in operating results for the full year from the 1.6 billion euros recorded last year. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollar)
