THE HAGUE, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Five people were injured on Thursday in a stabbing incident near Dam Square in central Amsterdam, according to city police.
The incident occurred on Sint Nicolaasstraat, a street close to the popular tourist area. Police have cordoned off part of the square and arrested a suspect.
"The motive is currently still unclear, but it is part of our investigation," police said on social media platform X.
A trauma helicopter landed in front of the Royal Palace on Dam Square and later departed, the national broadcaster NOS reported.
Several shops in the Sint Nicolaasstraat area were closed following the incident, and tram services around the square were suspended.
Police have urged the public to avoid the area and called on anyone with footage of the incident to share it with investigators.
