Belarus MPs ratify agreement with Russia on security guarantees

MINSK, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Belarusian parliament ratified an agreement between Belarus and Russia on security guarantees within the Union State, the press service of the Belarusian parliament said on Wednesday.

The agreement is of strategic importance for strengthening the alliance relations between Belarus and Russia, Sergei Aleinik, chairman of the commission on international affairs and national security of the upper house of the Belarusian parliament, said on Wednesday.

The document cements the single defense space of Belarus and Russia, ensures defense security along the external perimeter of the borders of the two states, he said.

The treaty is exclusively peaceful and defensive in nature and provides for clear regulation of the recognized norms of the UN Charter, the official stressed.

The agreement was signed by Lukashenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Dec. 6, 2024 in Minsk.

The agreement establishes generally accepted approaches designed to demonstrate strict compliance by its participants with the norms and principles of international law in fulfilling mutual obligations in the area of security.
