VALLETTA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Maltese Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa said on Tuesday that eight people had been arrested in connection with the theft of around 200 kilograms of seized cannabis at Safi.

Though Malta's Interior Minister Byron Camilleri offered his resignation over the incident, the Maltese cabinet of ministers expressed its "full confidence" in Camilleri on Tuesday, allowing him to remain in office.

Camilleri tendered his resignation on Sunday after the cannabis, intercepted at the Malta Freeport, was stolen from a storage facility overnight between Saturday and Sunday.

Prime Minister Robert Abela had earlier rejected his resignation offer and announced an administrative inquiry in addition to the ongoing magisterial investigation.

The theft occurred at Safi, in a property manned by the Armed Forces of Malta, where a container with illegal drugs seized last year has been kept and guarded. Police confirmed the stolen drugs were part of a shipment seized at the Malta Freeport last June.
