Honduras to 'immediately' transfer Venezuelan migrants deported from US

(Reuters) - Some 170 Venezuelan migrants are set to arrive in the Central American nation of Honduras from the United States, the Honduran government said on Thursday, before being transported "immediately" back to Venezuela.

The United States has pushed for countries around Latin America to receive third-country migrants after U.S. President Donald Trump came to power, pledging to tighten the southern border and implement the mass deportation of migrants.

One of the challenges of Trump's plan is that some migrants come from countries that refuse to accept U.S. deportation flights due to strained diplomatic relations or other reasons.

Agreements with other countries however shift the responsibility of organizing the repatriation flights from the United States.

Honduras' announcement comes a day after a group of nearly 100 migrants - including from Afghanistan and Iran - the U.S. deported to Panama were moved from a hotel in the capital to the country's dangerous southern Darien jungle region.
