Sarajevo police seize drugs, weapons in major operation

SARAJEVO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Police seized more than 100 kilograms of drugs and a large cache of weapons in an anti-drug operation, authorities in the Sarajevo Canton announced on Thursday.

During searches in the Stari Grad area of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, authorities discovered over 2 kilograms of cocaine, more than 4 kilograms of speed, around 80 kilograms of marijuana, approximately 26,000 ecstasy tablets weighing 13.5 kilograms, and over 30 liters of amphetamine oil. Police also confiscated two rifles, five handguns, two silencers, and more than 400 rounds of ammunition.

A taxi driver from Sarajevo was taken into custody on suspicion of unauthorized production and trafficking of narcotics, as well as illegal possession of weapons or explosive materials.

The seized drugs are estimated to have a market value exceeding 1 million KM (about 530,000 U.S. dollars). The suspect has been handed over to the Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor's Office for further legal proceedings.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing as police intensify efforts to combat drug-related crime. (1 KM = 0.53 U.S. dollar)
