Ethiopia-Djibouti railway boosts capacity for carrying export, import goods: EDR chief

ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Ethio-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company (EDR) is making good progress, boosting its capacity for carrying export and import goods, EDR Chief Executive Officer Takele Uma disclosed Thursday.

"With the addition of more locomotives and wagons, we are now able to serve even more areas, expanding from Indode and Adama to Mojo, Dire Dawa, and Sabata freight yards," Uma said on his X account.

Uma noted the EDR has been replacing and repairing malfunctioning equipment, increasing its fleet from eight to 21 locomotives and from 892 to 935 wagons.

"Our dedication to enhancing our freight yard operation and space means improved efficiency and reduced logistics costs, helping meet the nation's growing demand for transportation services," he said.

Since its inauguration in 2018, the Chinese-built railway has continued to develop its freight market and expand its service offerings, including high-quality services such as cold-chain transportation, commuter trains for villagers, and special trains for automobile transportation.

In May last year, the Chinese management contractors of the Ethiopia-Djibouti standard gauge railway officially handed over the railway's management and operation to Ethiopia and Djibouti after six years of successful operation.
