OTTAWA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that the proposed tariffs between the United States and Canada will be paused for at least 30 days.
Trudeau made the announcement in his social media account after talking with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Canada is reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhancing coordination with the American partners, and increasing resources to stop the flow of fentanyl, said the prime minister, adding that nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.
Canada will also appoint a "Fentanyl Czar" as part of its deal with the United States, said Trudeau.
"We will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering," said Trudeau.
Canada and the United States appear to have avoided a costly tariff war for now.
On Saturday, the Trump administration announced to impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China. The tariff order on Canada is 25 percent on all imports and 10 percent on energy products.
Canada hit back with 25-percent tariffs on 155 billion Canadian dollars (107 billion U.S. dollars) worth of American goods.
