LUSAKA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Zambia recorded an increase in copper production in 2024 compared to the previous year, a senior government official said Thursday.
Paul Kabuswe, minister of mines and minerals development, said the country produced 820,676 metric tons of copper last year compared to 732,583 metric tons in 2023.
The growth represents a 12 percent increase, said the official, attributing the increase to investments driven mainly by large-scale mining and the resumption of operations at Konkola Copper Mines and Mopani Copper Mines, two of the country's biggest mines.
"Increasing mineral production in general and working toward the attainment of the 3 million metric tons of copper production annually by 2031 in particular remains the major focus," Kabuswe told journalists during a press briefing.
