U.S. stocks close higher


NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Wednesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 703.27 points, or 1.65 percent, to 43,221.55. The S&P 500 added 107.00 points, or 1.83 percent, to 5,949.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 466.84 points, or 2.45 percent, to 19,511.23.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with consumer discretionary and communication services leading the gainers by going up 3.02 percent and 2.66 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, consumer staples bucked the trend by losing 0.09 percent.
