Hundreds of Cypriots demonstrate against UK airbase

NICOSIA, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people marched to a British airbase in Cyprus on Sunday, protesting its role in the Gaza conflict.

Holding banners and flags, the demonstrators marched to the main gate of the Akrotiri airbase on the south coast of Cyprus.

The protest was organized by the Cyprus Peace Council and supported by leftist opposition AKEL party, which had urged people to gather in force outside the base.

The Cyprus Peace Council said in a statement that "military activities on the ground and in the air around Akrotiri heighten concern that Cyprus may become a target for an attack."
