U.S. stocks close higher


NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 83.57 points, or 0.20 percent, to 42,208.22. The S&P 500 added 14.36 points, or 0.25 percent, to 5,732.93. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 100.25 points, or 0.56 percent, to 18,074.52.

Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with financials and utilities leading the laggards by losing 0.92 percent and 0.76 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, materials and technology led the gainers by rising 1.35 percent and 0.79 percent, respectively.
