Oil spill response exercise kicks off in Baltic Sea


VILNIUS, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- An international oil spill response exercise started in the Baltic Sea on Monday, according to Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Seven countries including Finland, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Sweden participated in the exercise to enhance ability to jointly respond to major marine pollution incidents.

About 60 observers will observe the exercise, with more than 300 people participating. The exercise will last until Thursday.

"The largest pollution response exercise in the Baltic Sea this year has started today, the Lithuanian Naval Forces (Navy) is dedicating its search and rescue and pollution response vessel," said Giedrius Premeneckas, commander of Lithuania's Navy.

The exercise is organized by Lithuania's Navy in cooperation with the port of Klaipeda, local firefighters and the Lithuanian Sea Museum.
