One dead, six injured after overpass collapses in Russia's Smolensk


MOSCOW, April 8 (Xinhua) -- One person was dead and six others were injured after an overpass in Russia's Smolensk region collapsed on Monday, local media reported.

The Paninsky Road overpass collapsed onto a section of railway tracks near the Vyazma station in the town of Vyazma. A truck and car were on the bridge at the time of the incident, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Five of the wounded people are in serious or moderate condition, suffering multiple injuries, according to the local health department.

No trains were present on the railway tracks when the collapse happened, but train traffic was suspended along this segment, Moscow Railway said on Telegram.

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case into the incident.
