Five killed after building collapses in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least five construction workers were killed on Sunday night and nine others injured after a two-story building collapsed in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro region, officials said on Monday.

The building, under construction in the district of Moshi, collapsed at 9 p.m. on Sunday, killing the five construction workers, Moshi District Commissioner Abbas Kayanda told a news conference.

"There were a total of 30 construction workers at the site in Sembeti village," Kayanda said, adding that 16 of them were rescued unhurt.

Jeremiah Mkomagi, Kilimanjaro region acting commander for the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force, said preliminary investigations blamed the collapse on poor construction.
