NAIROBI, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Over 4,000 Kenyans have died from road accidents as of mid-November this year, said the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in its latest update released on Sunday in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.
The agency said that 4,103 people succumbed to injuries related to road accidents by November 17, surpassing the 3,947 fatalities recorded in 2021.
NTSA Board Chairperson Agnes Odhiambo said Nairobi recorded the highest number of road accident deaths, adding that among the most vulnerable demographics includes motorcycle riders, pedestrians, and school-going children.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we must all play our parts," Odhiambo remarked during an event to observe the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims.
Martha Koome, the Chief Justice of Kenya, said that enactment of punitive legislation, greater public awareness, and enhanced vigilance was key to curbing road accidents in the country.
