Dow, S&P 500 hit record highs on New Year's Eve


NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Wall Street's major averages finish higher on Thursday as investors digested the newly-released U.S. jobless claims numbers.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 196.92 points, or 0.65 percent, to 30,606.48. The S&P 500 increased 24.03 points, or 0.64 percent, to 3,756.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 18.28 points, or 0.14 percent, to 12,888.28. Both the 30-stock Dow index and the S&P 500 notched their record closes.
