Honduras reports decline in deaths from traffic accidents in 2020

TEGUCIGALPA, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 1,157 people lost their lives in Honduras due to road accidents in 2020, a decline compared to previous years, the spokesman for the National Directorate of Roads and Transportation, Jose Estevez, said on Saturday.

During Christmas Eve celebrations, 10 people died due to road accidents, said Estevez.

To date, 2,245 people have been injured in more than 7,000 accidents.

Road accidents in Honduras are the second leading cause of death after homicides.

According to Honduran authorities, the decrease in deaths during 2020 is due to the quarantine imposed by the government since mid-March to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
